Re-Radiation and the Fourth Power

Every object warmer than absolute zero radiates energy, and the rate at which it radiates follows one of the most consequential relationships in physics: the Stefan-Boltzmann law, under which thermal radiation scales with the fourth power of absolute temperature.

The fourth power is the part worth pausing on. Radiated energy does not grow in step with temperature — it grows explosively. A surface at 150°F radiates roughly 40% more energy than the same surface at 90°F, even though the temperature itself rose far less than 40% on the absolute scale. Hot surfaces are not just proportionally worse than warm ones; they are disproportionately worse.

This law connects directly to the absorption story from Chapter 2.3. A surface that absorbs solar energy heats up — and the hotter it runs, the harder it radiates from both of its faces, including the face pointed at the interior. The relationship compounds against absorptive systems in strong sun: more absorption produces higher temperature, higher temperature produces fourth-power radiation growth, and a meaningful share of that radiation aims inward.

The same law also explains the lived experience of a sun-soaked cabin. A dashboard that has climbed far above air temperature becomes a powerful radiator in its own right, projecting heat onto everything around it — which is why a cabin can feel hottest not from the air, but from the radiant pressure of its own baked surfaces.
