The Spectrum Isn't Flat

The solar spectrum has a shape, and that shape is the single most consequential fact in all of solar performance measurement.

Energy is not distributed evenly across wavelengths. Within the near-infrared band, energy density rises to a peak in the lower NIR — near 900 to 1,000 nanometers — then descends irregularly, dropping through the atmospheric absorption notches near 1,400 and 1,900 nanometers, and tapering substantially by 2,500 nanometers. A nanometer of wavelength near the peak carries several times the solar power of a nanometer in the tail. This distribution is documented wavelength-by-wavelength in the ASTM G173 reference tables; it is measured physical reality, not industry opinion.

The consequence is profound: equal percentages are not equal work. Blocking 95% of the energy at a wavelength near the peak removes far more real heat than blocking 95% at a wavelength in the tail — yet a simple unweighted percentage reports both identically. Where performance happens on the spectrum matters as much as how much performance is claimed.

This single fact is the key that unlocks the entire measurement story told later in this catalog. Any number describing infrared performance without accounting for the spectrum's shape is describing wavelengths, not energy. Once the shape is seen, it cannot be unseen — and no spectral performance claim reads the same way again.
