Absorption: The Moment Heat Is Born

Absorption is the single most important mechanism in this entire subject, and it can be described precisely.

A photon is a packet of electromagnetic energy. When it reaches a material, one of the things it can do is be absorbed: the photon's energy is transferred into the atoms and molecules of the material. Those particles respond by vibrating faster. Temperature is, at the molecular level, a measure of exactly that vibration — so the moment of absorption is the moment heat is born. The photon ceases to exist; its energy lives on as molecular motion.

This happens billions of times per second across every sunlit surface. A dashboard in direct sun is not "collecting heat from the sun" — it is performing billions of tiny energy conversions per second, each one turning radiation into vibration.

One clarification this framing makes possible: infrared radiation is often casually called "heat radiation," but the photon itself is just energy, like any other photon. Infrared earned the nickname because warm objects emit it readily and skin absorbs it readily — not because it carries heat through space. No photon does.
