It Starts 93 Million Miles Away

The sun does not send heat to Earth. It sends electromagnetic radiation — photons traveling at the speed of light through roughly 93 million miles of vacuum. There is no air on that journey, no medium, and no heat transfer of any kind. Heat does not exist in transit.

Heat is created on arrival. When a photon strikes a material — a dashboard, skin, a pane of glass — it is absorbed by the atoms in that material. The energy of the absorbed photon makes those atoms vibrate faster, and that increased vibration is what thermometers measure and what bodies feel as warmth.

This distinction is the foundation of the entire subject. The sun does not heat a vehicle. The sun energizes the vehicle's materials, and those materials heat the vehicle.
