The Manufacturing Cost Ladder
Production cost in window film tracks the manufacturing method far more closely than it tracks the marketing label — and knowing the ladder reframes how price tiers should be read.
At the base sits dyed film: extrusion plus dye coating, the simplest construction in the industry.
One rung up, carbon particle film. Carbon black is an abundant, commodity-priced industrial material, and applying it requires coating-line infrastructure, not vacuum deposition. The technology's value position is real; its production economics are modest.
Next, particle-dispersed ceramic. Ceramic nanoparticles cost more than carbon black — but the application process is similar coating work. Structurally, this places dispersed ceramic closer to carbon on the cost ladder than to anything sputtered, whatever its label or price suggests.

The genuine discontinuity arrives with sputtering. Vacuum deposition lines are capital-intensive industrial infrastructure operated by relatively few facilities, and both sputtered metal films and sputtered TiN ceramic films sit above this jump — TiN higher still, given the controlled reactive deposition its quality demands.
At the summit, multi-layer optical film: constructions of two hundred or more coextruded layers in proprietary processes — the most complex manufacturing tier in commercial production.
The reframing this ladder enables: when a particle-dispersed product is priced as though it shared a tier with sputtered TiN, the buyer is paying a sputtered price for coating-line economics. The label says ceramic; the ladder says where it was actually built. Price should be read against construction — and construction, as the next chapter shows, can often be read from the product line itself.
