Why IRER Still Isn't Enough

IRER answers the infrared question honestly. The remaining problem is that the infrared question is not the whole question.

The visible gap. IRER's scope is the NIR band — roughly half of solar energy. The visible band, carrying around 44%, sits entirely outside it. Series 1 and 2 established what that omitted energy does: it transmits, strikes interior surfaces, and converts to heat with full efficiency. A glazing with outstanding IRER and high visible transmission is still admitting nearly half of the solar budget — invisibly to the metric. No infrared-scoped number, however honestly constructed, can see it.

The UV gap. Ultraviolet carries roughly 3–5% of solar energy, also outside IRER's scope. Thermally minor; not zero.

The conditions assumption. Like every laboratory optical metric, IRER describes standardized still-air conditions. Series 2 established that real vehicles alternate between two thermal worlds — the parked still-air soak and the convection-assisted moving condition — that a single laboratory number cannot distinguish. This is a limitation of all laboratory metrics, not a flaw unique to IRER, but it belongs in any honest accounting of what a published number can and cannot promise.

The progression of this series is now fully visible. A narrow-window IRR describes a slice of one band. IRER describes the full infrared band with honest accounting. What remains is the metric scoped to the entire solar spectrum — the one number on a specification sheet that corresponds to the whole energy budget. That metric is the next chapter.
