The Experimenter's Toolkit & Ground Rules
Direct measurement is the most durable form of understanding, and it requires no laboratory — only modest tools and disciplined method. The toolkit and the rules, before any experiment begins.
The toolkit. The essential instrument is a non-contact infrared thermometer — inexpensive, widely available, and the single most useful tool for reading surface temperatures on glass, dashboards, and seats. Supporting items: a probe or digital thermometer for cabin air readings at consistent locations; a notebook (or the journal template in Chapter 5.8); a timer; masking tape to mark fixed measurement points so repeat readings land on identical spots; and optionally a solar power meter to record the actual solar input during a test.
The ground rules — established experimental method, applied to a parking lot:
Change one variable at a time. The most common error in field thermal testing is changing several things at once. Same conditions, same locations, same timing — one difference, observed.
Measure surfaces, not just air. Series 2 established why: solar energy becomes heat at surfaces, and surface temperatures reflect absorption and rejection far more directly than air, which mixes many influences.
Wait for equilibrium. Thermal systems take time to reach steady state — the soak curve of Chapter 2.8 climbs before it plateaus. A measurement taken after a full soak says far more than one taken minutes in.
Document everything. Ambient temperature, time of day, sky condition, sun angle, vehicle orientation, measurement locations. Repeatability lives in the records.
Know what is being tested. These experiments reveal real-world thermal behavior and verify claims directionally. They do not replicate laboratory optical methodology, and they do not generate spec-sheet numbers. They generate something different and, for the individual, more durable: owned evidence.
